Kings of Ovambo

The kings of the Ovambo are the traditional leaders ( English Traditional Leaders ) of the tribe of the Ovambo in Namibia and still carry a social and political role in the country's north.

Legal basis

According to the Namibian Constitution of 1990, traditional leaders, tribal and clan heads, as well as traditionally determined or democratically elected leaders, are given a permanent place in the Namibian political system . This takes into account the multicultural and multi-layered society of the country.

The constitution provides for the title of Chief ( German  Chef ) and Senior Headman (oldest leader) for traditional leaders . The traditional designation as king can be used.

Ombadja

The Ombadja are a clan of the Ovambo in Namibia. The traditional title is Elenga enene . The seat of the king is Okalongo . They have only been recognized as a traditional administration since 2004 and were part of the Oukwanyama until then .

Ombalantu

The Ombalantu are a clan of the Ovambo in Namibia. The traditional title is Elenga . The seat of the king is the city of Outapi .

On July 30, 2011, Michael Shapumba Nauta was to be crowned king. However, this was forbidden by the court on the same day, as Nauta has no legal basis to be proclaimed king and Mukulu is the only legal representative of the Ombalantu.

Ondonga

The Ondonga are a clan of the Ovambo in Namibia. The traditional title is Omukwaniilwa (rarely referred to as Ohamba ). The king's seat is the respective homestead of the king, since April 2019 Onambango not far from Ondangwa . At the end of February 2020 it was announced that Onambango would receive a palace for all future kings.

According to the Ondonga tradition, the heir to the throne is always the next-eldest brother of the king and, in the absence of such, the eldest nephew, i.e. H. the sister's eldest son. The father's royal status is not inheritable. The maternal line is decisive. The king's sons have no place in the line of succession.

Ongandjera

The Ongandjera are clan of the Ovambo in Namibia. The traditional title is Omukwaniilwa . The seat of the king is Ongandjera / Okahao .

Uukolonkadhi

The Uukolonkadhi are a clan of the Ovambo in Namibia. The traditional title is Elenga . The king's seat is Onesi .

Uukwaluudhi

The Uukwaluudhi are a clan of the Ovambo in Namibia. The traditional title is Omukwaniilwa . The seat of the king is Tsandi .

Uukwambi

The Uukwambi are a clan of the Ovambo in Namibia. The traditional title is Elenga enene . The seat of the king is Elim .

Uukwanyama

The Uukwanyama , rarely also Oukwanyama, are a clan of the Ovambo in Namibia. The traditional title is Ohamba . The seat of the king is Ohangwena .
