Necropolis in the Bois de Vergentière
The necropolis in the Bois de Vergentière (forest) is located west of Cohons , in the south of the Haute-Marne department in France . The prehistoric remains in the Bois de la Vergentière consist of a plundered necropolis and a settlement from the Middle Neolithic . The necropolis, examined by Louis Lepage between 1976 and 1985, has about six burial mounds.
The dolmens
In France, dolmen is the generic term for Neolithic megalithic structures of all kinds (see: French nomenclature ).
Dolmen 1
Dolmen 1 lies in a hill about 10.0 m long, 6.0 m wide and 1.0 m high. The approximately 2.5 m long and 1.0 m wide southeast-northwest oriented chamber is bounded by several orthostats and is closed in the north with a small plate. The archaeological layers contained bone fragments that appeared to be separated by limestone slabs . The middle Neolithic dolmen was reused in the late Neolithic.
Dolmen 2
Dolmen 2 is surrounded by a round tumulus about 5.0 m in diameter and consists of a 1.5 m long and 1.0 m wide northwest-southeast oriented chamber. The 1.9 m long, 1.5 m wide and 0.25 m thick ceiling slab is in situ . The excavations revealed little archaeological material. The dolmen, classified as a monument historique since 1990, dates from the Middle Neolithic.
The tumuli
The third tumulus is a mound about 4.0 m in diameter in which several plates lie as the remains of a destroyed megalithic structure.
The fourth tumulus is 1.2 meters high and about 12.0 meters long and 9.0 meters wide. It has a layer of megaliths 3.50 m long and 1.20 m wide. It was completely emptied during a previous looting.
The fifth tumulus is a hill about 9.0 m long and 6.0 m wide with no internal construction. Its search yielded no archaeological material1.
The sixth tumulus is 5 m in diameter and 0.6 m high. Remnants of an internal structure are not preserved.
