Nelson Marra

Nelson Marra (born May 6, 1942 in Montevideo , Uruguay , † December 3, 2007 in Madrid , Spain ) was a Uruguayan writer and literary critic .

During the military dictatorship in Uruguay (1973-1984) Marra was imprisoned for four years after the El guardaespalda (in German: The Bodyguard ), a parable on the dictatorship, written by him , was awarded in the Marcha magazine literary competition. During this time he was tortured and was not released until 1978. Together with him, the publisher of Marcha Carlos Quijano , the editor-in-chief Hugo Alfaro and the two writers serving as jury members Juan Carlos Onetti and Mercedes Rein were also imprisoned.

After his release he went into exile in Sweden and then settled in Spain. There he worked as editor and cultural critic of the magazine Interviú and was active as a literary critic for the newspaper El Mundo . He has also published the books Tango (1986), Sólo para mujeres (1992), Cenicienta antes del parto (1993) and De cabreos y nostalgias (1995).

Suffering from Alzheimer's disease in the last few years of his life , Nelson Marr died on December 3, 2007.
