The Nelson Strait is a strait in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands . It runs between Nelson Island in the east and Robert Island in the west.
The US sealer captain Nathaniel Palmer was probably the first to map the sea route in 1821 and named it Harmony Strait . On the map of the British sealer captain George Powell from 1822, however, it is listed as King George's Strait , James Weddell named it as Parrys Strait in 1825 . Its current name is derived from Nelson Island. This island is named after the British sealer Nelson from Southampton , who operated in the waters around the South Shetland Islands between 1820 and 1821.
