Nemapogon granella , also known as the "corn moth", is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of real moths (Tineidae).
features
The moths have a body length of 6–7 mm and a wingspan of 9 to 16 millimeters. They are characterized by a light, brownish basic color and an irregular dark brown pattern.
The whitish yellow caterpillars reach a length of 7-10 mm. The head capsule is usually dark brown in color.
Similar species
The moths can only be reliably distinguished from the following species with the help of a dissection and microscopic examination.
- Nemapogon cloacella ( cork moth )
- Nemapogon variatella (rye moth)
Occurrence
Nemapogon granella is native to the western Palearctic . The species is widespread across Europe. They occur in western Asia. Due to the preference of the caterpillars for stored products, the species is regularly introduced all over the world, although it does not necessarily establish itself as a species in different places. For example, it occurs regularly in Australia. There appears to be a population of Nemapogon granella in North America .
Way of life
The moths are found from March to September. They mainly fly at dusk, but they can also be found occasionally during the day.
The caterpillars feed on various stalk porling (Polyporales), including the birch porling ( Fomitopsis betulina ). In addition, the caterpillars can also be found on various grains, legumes, dried fruits, nuts and other agricultural products, where they cause damage or impairment through their eating, excrement and pupae. For this reason, Nemapogon granella is considered a storage pest . Pheromone traps are one way of combating the pests.
