Nematasketum diversiforme is an enigmatic fossil from the Devonian . It is similar in structure to Prototaxites and is known from charred , three-dimensional fossils. It consists of tubes in two size classes. Some of the tubes have internal thickenings.
Nematasketum can be interpreted as either a fungus or an alga , but there are reasons for and against both interpretations.
