The blue-winged parakeet ( Brotogeris cyanoptera ) is a species of the New World parrots. It occurs exclusively in South America. The species is classified as harmless by the IUCN . In contrast to most narrow-billed parakeets, the blue-winged parakeet is one of the species that was exported to Europe and North America for ornamental bird keeping very late. Presumably the first individuals did not reach Europe until 1969.
Appearance
The blue-winged parakeet reaches a body length of 20 centimeters. As is characteristic of all narrow-billed parakeets , it has a green basic plumage. The forehead is yellow. The parting, the back of the head and the neck are tinged with blue. The reins are yellowish. Similar to the Tovis parakeet, there is a small orange spot below the chin. Back plumage and upper tail-coverts are dark green. The coverts, arms and wings are bluish purple. The underside of the wings is blue-green.
The beak is horn-colored. The eye ring is featherless and white. The iris is dark brown. The feet are flesh-colored.
Spread and behavior
The blue-winged parakeet occurs from the south of Venezuela, the west of Brazil and the south-east of Colombia to the east of Ecuador and Peru and the north of Bolivia. They are typical representatives of the avifauna of the lowland forests. They live in pairs or in small schools. Their food spectrum includes seeds, flowers and fruits.
