The narrow- billed parakeets ( Brotogeris ) are a genus of the New World parrots . All species belonging to this genus occur exclusively in Central and South America.

Appearance

Narrow-bill parakeets have a narrow bill that is unusually elongated. The tip is strongly curved and thin. The lower jaw is stretched. Wax skin and eye ring are not feathered. The tail is tiered and no longer than two thirds of the wing length. There is no sexual dimorphism and the young birds are similar to the adult birds.

Narrow-nosed parakeets are small parrots and reach a body size between 16 and 23 centimeters. The smallest species is the golden-winged parakeet with a body length of 16 centimeters. The next larger species is the Tovis parakeet with a body length of 18 centimeters.

behavior

The diet of most narrow-billed parakeets includes seeds, fruits, berries, nectar, insects, insect larvae, plants and tree bark. Some species also eat filamentous algae and water snails. The golden-winged parakeet , in particular, is able to pull snails out of their shells thanks to its beak.
