Neocyema erythrosoma is a little researched fish species from the order of the eel-like (Anguilliformes). It is only known from five adult specimens caught in the deep sea in the south-eastern and northern Atlantic and one22.5 mm long willow leaf larva (Leptocephalus)foundin the Sargasso Sea .

features

Neocyema erythrosoma has an arrow-shaped, bright red-orange body, which is relatively short for eel-like, and becomes 16 cm long. The head is small, the jaws are pointed. The Leptocephalus still has large eyes, which in the adult fish are greatly reduced and overgrown by skin. The eye reduction is more pronounced in Neocyema erythrosoma than in other pelican eel-like . The red-orange tint of the adult animals is limited to the head and intestinal region in the Leptocephali. The leptocephali of Neocyema erythrosoma also do not show a black color like the larvae of other pelican eel species.

Systematics

The species and genus were described in 1978 and assigned to the family Cyematidae, which was previously monotypic and only included the species Cyema atrum . A DNA comparison of an adult specimen of Neocyema erythrosoma caught southeast of Greenland and a leptocephalus found in the Sargasso Sea with Cyema atrum and other deep-sea eels showed no closer relationship between the two species. Erythrosoma Neocyema is the sister group to a common clade of Pelikanaals (Eurypharyngidae) with the bag mouths (Saccopharyngidae) while Cyema atrum a clade with the Einkieferaalen forms (Monognathidae).
