Systematics
Class : Ray fins (Actinopterygii)
Subclass : Neuflosser (Neopterygii)
Subclass : Real bony fish (Teleostei)
Cohort : Elopomorpha
Order : Eel-like (Anguilliformes)
Subordination : Pelican eel-like
Scientific name
Saccopharyngoidei
CR Robins , 1989

The pelican eel-like (Saccopharyngoidei) or bag mouth-like are a subordination of the eel-like , which have particularly adapted to life in the deep sea .

features

In addition to their huge mouth, the animals' bodies appear very small. The fish are scaly, there is no swim bladder, no ribs and no caudal fin. Many bones in the skull are reduced or have disappeared. It is difficult to compare the remaining skeleton with that of other fish and thus to draw conclusions about a relationship. The fact that the larvae resemble those of the eels suggests a relationship with them. There are no fossils of pelican eel-like species.

External system

The pelican eel-like were originally led as a separate order, the Saccopharyngiformes. Phylogenetically , however, they are clearly within the eel-like (Anguilliformes). In a recent revision of the Teleostei system , they are therefore listed as a subordination of the eel-like. The probable family relationships are shown in the following simplified cladogram :

  Anguilliformes

 other families of the Anguilliformes

 Worm Eels (Moringuidae)

 Pelican eels (Saccopharyngoidei)

 Snipe eels (Nemichthyidae)

 Sawtooth snipe eels (Serrivomeridae)

 River eels (Anguillidae)
