The sawtooth snipe eels (Serrivomeridae) (Latin serra = saw, vomer = ploughshare ) live pelagically in the Atlantic , Pacific and Indian Oceans in the deep sea between 1000 and 4500 meters depth.

features

The fish are 40 to 80 centimeters long. Their jaws are narrow and elongated. On the vomer the teeth sit in two or more rows. The tail of the sawtooth snipe eel ends in a thread. The gill openings are connected to one another on the belly side. The elongated fish have 137 to 170 vertebrae . They are mostly black with silvery flanks. The larvae of the Serrivomeridae migrate to the surface at night.

species

Ten of the eleven species belong to the genus Serrivomer . There is also the monotypic genus Stemonidium with only one species.
