Nepenthes gracilis is a species of pitcher plants ( Nepenthes ). This carnivorous plant isnativeto the islands of Borneo , Sulawesi, and Sumatra .
description
Like most Nepenthes species, Nepenthes gracilis is a perennial , climbing subshrub . The leaf base (often interpreted as a leaf blade in pitcher plants ) is lanceolate and leathery. The bottom pitchers are light green and up to 7.5 cm long, while the top pitchers turn from light green to dark red over time and grow up to 15 cm long. It looks very similar to Nepenthes alata , a feature that distinguishes both species, however, Nepenthes gracilis has no glandular crest under the lid.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 80.
distribution and habitat
Nepenthes gracilis inhabits the lowlands of Borneo, Sumatra and Sulawesi. As a lowland species, it thrives in consistently warm climates. It grows primarily in acidic, nutrient-poor soils and avoids dense and shady vegetation.
Systematics
It is assigned to the so-called lowland Nepenthes . The first description of Nepenthes gracilis was in 1839 by Pieter Willem Korthals in his work Over het geslacht Nepenthes .
