Nepenthes tentaculata is a pitcher plant species from the pitcher plant family(Nepenthaceae). The plant wasdescribedby Joseph Dalton Hooker in 1873and is closely related to Nepenthes murudensis .

description

Nepenthes tentaculata is a plant that usually grows along the ground and forms rosettes up to ten centimeters high at regular intervals of ten centimeters from the nodes of the up to five millimeters thick and up to three, rarely up to four meters long stem axis , so that smaller clumps can arise. But as soon as it comes into contact with an object that it can climb up to, it begins to climb.

The apparent leaf blades , which in the strict sense represent only a transformed leaf base , are leathery, lanceolate to elliptical and up to fifteen centimeters long. The tendril extensions also reach this length. At the end they go into jugs up to thirty centimeters high and eight centimeters wide, the lower third of which is egg-shaped and continues cylindrically towards the peristome , the two wings running vertically around the whole jug are fringed. The typical dimorphism of the cans shows itself in a more cylindrical shape and the transformation of the wings into pure ribs in the air cans.

The grape-shaped inflorescences consist of a flower stalk up to fifteen centimeters long and a false ear up to ten centimeters long . The individual flowers are up to ten millimeters long peduncles, the oblong to inverted-lanceolate petals are up to 3 millimeters long. Like all pitcher plants, Nepenthes tentaculata is dioecious , the female inflorescences are usually smaller than the male.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 80.

Distribution and habitat

Nepenthes tentaculata in the habitat in cushions of sphagnum

Nepenthes tentaculata is native to Borneo and Sulawesi , where it grows in mossy forests in heavily shaded and humid as well as drier, open locations at altitudes between (700) 1000 and 2100 (2550) m above sea level. NN. occurs primarily in sphagnum or peat soils, but occasionally also in sand or ultrabasic rock . It often occurs in association with other pitcher plant species.

Systematics

For a long time, two varieties were still distinguished: Nepenthes tentaculata Hook.f. var. imberbis Becc. and Nepenthes tentaculata Hook.f. var. tomentosa Macfarl. These are now regarded as synonyms of Nepenthes tentaculata .

Some site forms from Sulawesi and from Kinabalu show clear morphological differences. It was discussed whether this species rank is due, but it is not certain.
