Nephon II
Nephon II. ( Greek Νήφων Β΄ ; † 1508) was Patriarch of Constantinople 1486–1488 and 1497–1498. He is venerated as a saint in the Greek Orthodox Church . Remembrance day is August 11th .
Life
He was born in the Peloponnese to a noble Greek woman and an Albanian. His name was Nikolai. The year of birth is not recorded.
He became a monk in Epidaurus . His field of activity was the copying of texts. Nephon then moved to the Marian monastery in Ohrid . Later he went to Mount Athos and became an arch monk. In 1482 he was elected Metropolitan of Thessaloniki . In 1486 he became Patriarch of Constantinople. He was supported by the Prince of Wallachia . In 1488 he was removed from office by Sultan Bayezid II . He went to the Black Sea near Sozopol .
In 1497 he was again elected Patriarch of Constantinople, again with the support of the Prince of Wallachia. In 1498 he was succeeded, Joachim I. Nephon was arrested in Adrianople . Later he was able to go to Wallachia. He consecrated two bishops there.
In 1502 he was re-elected Patriarch of Constantinople. However, he refused to accept the office and stayed in Wallachia. In 1505 he came into conflict with Prince Radu IV. He went to Macedonia and later to Mount Athos.
In 1508 he died in the Dionysios monastery on Mount Athos. In 1517 he was canonized.
