Nereis is a genus of polychaete from the family of Nereidae . It consists of many mostly marine species , including the ring worms Nereis diversicolor and Nereis virens .
Their parapodia, which are used for locomotion, are characterized by tongue-shaped dorsal and ventral lobes. Its 4 eyes and 2 antennae at the head end as well as the powerful jaw forceps in the esophagus, which can be pushed forward far, are characteristic .
The name comes from the sea nymphs in Greek mythology, the Nereids (singular Nereís).
