Nergal-ušēzib ruled for six months in 693 BC. As Babylonian king after he was installed in his office by Hallušu-Inšušinak . A year earlier, following clashes between Elam and the Assyrians , an attack on Babylonia and a subsequent partial conquest had occurred.

In the spring of 693 BC Nergal-ušēzib conquered other parts of Babylonia, including Nippur . Then the Assyrians attacked and took Uruk , which may have been under the rule of Nergal-ušēzib. Nergal-ušēzib fled to Elam, from where he launched a counter-attack. But he was captured in the province of Nippur and brought to the Assyrians.
