Nestorone is synthetic progestin , which as a drug for contraception (contraception), as hormone replacement therapy in the menopause and for treatment of endometriosis may be employed.

Unlike other gestagens, Nestoron can penetrate the skin and be applied in the form of a gel, cream, spray or implant ( vaginal ring ). When ingested, the substance is broken down in the gastrointestinal tract and therefore has no effect.

The 19-methyl substitution and the 16-methylene addition in Nestoron strengthen the bond to the progesterone receptor by a factor of 100 compared to progesterone .

In January 2004, a test started in Australia in which Nestoron should be tested in the form of a spray. This spray was developed by the Australian company Acrux and the US non-profit organization Population Council .
