Mapping of WiFi access points in Seattle by wardriving with NetStumbler, 2004

NetStumbler is a WLAN monitor program (scanner) for Windows. It scans the WLAN channels for available networks ( wireless access points , APs), so it is suitable for detecting hot spots . It runs under Microsoft Windows from version 2000 to XP, but not under Vista and Windows 7.

Due to the detailed information about the access points found and the ease of use, it is very popular for wardriving .

The information ascertained via the access points includes the MAC address , channel, network name ( SSID ), signal quality (also graphical) and encryption. Under certain circumstances, the program can also determine the manufacturer of the access point and the subnet used in the network . The access points are sorted according to channels, network names and criteria such as encryption, etc. The biggest drawback of Netstumbler is that it always shows all encrypted WLANs with WEP , even if they are secured with WPA or WPA2.

The program offers support for many GPS receivers. In this way, any access points found can be saved with their position. These determined data are transmitted to external servers, where they are later drawn on maps. This is particularly useful when wardriving. In addition, a scripting interface enables text-to-speech output of the network names or any further processing of the determined data.

In contrast to other well-known WLAN scanners such as Kismet , Netstumbler does not scan passively by listening to network packets, but rather actively by regularly sending so-called probe request frames. If the access point is configured in such a way that it reacts to this request, Netstumbler can recognize it. Otherwise, the AP does not appear in the list; this is referred to as a so-called closed AP .

For Windows CE there is a version called MiniStumbler .
