Ozias Humphry (born September 8, 1742 in Honiton , Devon , † March 9, 1810 in London ) was an English painter .

Life

At the age of 15, Humphry came to London in 1757. There he became a student at William Shipley's private painting school . He later worked for the Duke of Richmond's gallery and received further lessons from Henry Pars . In 1758, at the latest in 1759, he returned to his hometown. But as early as 1760, Humphry began a three-year apprenticeship with Samuel Collins in Bath . He later accompanied his teacher to Dublin and after a short stay in Exeter he returned to Bath.

Thomas Gainsborough advised him to go to London , which Humphry did in 1763. With a letter of recommendation from John Trenchard to Joshua Reynolds , he was able to work in Reynolds atelier and settle in London. Humphry achieved his artistic breakthrough in 1772 when the king bought some miniatures from him while visiting the Society of Arts . In 1772 he suffered a nervous disorder in a riding accident, which was the beginning of his eye ailment.

A year later he traveled with George Romney to Rome via Paris , Nice and Florence . In 1777 they returned to Great Britain via Switzerland and France . In 1779 Humphry was accepted as an associate in the Royal Academy of arts . At the age of 43 he went on a trip to Calcutta in August 1785 . In June 1786 he stayed in Lucknow and for a long time he also worked in Benares . Problems with the climate and an exacerbation of his eye condition led Humphry to leave India again in 1787 .

On March 16, 1788, Humphry reached London again. The Nabob von Lucknow owed him payment for some portraits. Until the end of his life, Humphry fought in vain for payment. In 1791 the Royal Academy finally made Humphry a full member. Since his eye disease had become very bad in the meantime, he gave up miniature painting and devoted himself more to pastel painting. His first portrait in this painting style shows the Duke of Dorset.

In 1792 Humphry was given the honorary title of royal. Pastel portrait painter . At the age of 55 he visited William Beckford in 1797 with Benjamin West and James Wyatt in Fonthill Abbey . From then on, Humphrys didn't paint anything at all, as he could hardly see anything. Ozias Humphry died on March 9, 1810 in London at the age of 68.
