The Netherlands Space Office (short: NSO ) is a government organization and the space organization of the Netherlands . Your task is to promote the Dutch space industry, plan and coordinate the Dutch space program and represent it to other space organizations.

founding

In October 2008, the Dutch Ministry of Economy ( Dutch Ministerie van Economische Zaken ), the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science ( Dutch Ministerie van Onderwijs, Cultuur en Wetenschap ) and the Ministry of Transport and Water Management ( Dutch Ministerie van Verkeer en Waterstaat ) signed a contract with the Netherlands organization for scientific research ( Dutch Netherlands organization for scientific research ), short NWO, an independent administrative authority under the auspices of the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, on the establishment of the Netherlands Space Office the Netherlands Space Office took his Work on July 1, 2009. The office took over the tasks of the Dutch Aviation and Space Administration ( Dutch Nederlands Instituut voor Viegenuigontwikkeling en Ruimtevaart , NIVR).

task

The NSO was set up by the Dutch government to develop, manage and promote the national space program. The NSO performs various tasks:

  • The NSO represents the Dutch space program and the Dutch companies and research institutions in the space industry vis-à-vis international space organizations such as the European Space Agency (ESA), the American National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). The NSO represents Dutch interests in various program committees and commissions of the ESA. In addition, the NSO sees itself as a central contact point for space research and industry in the Netherlands.
  • The NSO advises politics on space issues. The Netherlands is represented by a delegation on the ESA Steering Board , the ESA Council . The delegation consists of representatives from the Ministry of Economy and the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. The head of the NSO has the task of advising this delegation on relevant issues.
  • The NSO directs Dutch participation in ESA's technology programs and creates the framework for the work of the Dutch space industry and research institution. This happens, for example, through the coordination of national research programs and the coordination of the Dutch partners in international research projects.
  • The NSO always keeps an eye on the social use of the findings. It works both on the further development of space travel and its technologies, as well as on the use of knowledge and data from space and their transfer to other branches of industry. The focus is on astrophysics, earth observation and the exploration of planets.
  • In addition, the NSO provides students, teachers and the general public with the history of space science, its applications and development.

structure

The head of the NSO reports to a steering committee consisting of representatives from the ministries and the NWO.

The NSO operates two departments, the Technology & Industry Division and the Science & Application Division . The departments represent Dutch interests in ESA's thematic working groups on technology and science. The Technology & Industry department participates in the development and implementation of the Dutch space activities. A particular focus of her work is technology development. In addition to her work in the ESA committees, she is also active in various other committees. Among other things, the department represents the Netherlands in the technological space programs in the seventh research framework program of the European Union . The department coordinates national projects and the Dutch activities in international projects. For example, she coordinates the TROPOMI project.

The Department for Science and Application deals with the scientific aspects of space travel and the social and economic use of the results from space travel projects. Together with the NWO, she oversees two national research programs:

  • User Support Program Space Research for research in the fields of earth observation, research in weightlessness and exploration of planets. The project enables Dutch scientists to use equipment in space.
  • PI-Prepatory Program (PIPP) is a program to train future Dutch principal investigators for space projects.
