Netlog was a multilingual ad-supported social network that enabled its users to set up free user profiles with photos , videos , blogs , groups, etc. It ceased operations in spring 2014. If you go to Netlog's internet address , you will be redirected to Twoo . However, old, not deleted profiles could still be accessed through detours until 2018. On August 4, 2018, the operator informed users who had registered before 2012 that there was security-relevant access to user data in 2012.

Internet platform Netlog

Netlog was operated in fifteen European languages, was used by over 100 million members, including 3 million from German-speaking countries, and had over four billion website views. It was mainly used by 13- to 24-year-old members who could create a profile and socialize with one another, use new applications, create groups and send messages to other members. In 2012, Netlog was ranked 645th among the sites with the highest traffic according to Alexa.com . 2008 won Netlog the Open Web Award from Mashable in category "Mainstream and large Social Networks".

operator

Netlog was founded by Lorenz Bogaert and his partner Toon Coppens. The website " ASL.TO ", which was founded in 1999 and aimed at Belgian young people and was later renamed Redbox and Facebox , was merged with other -box websites in 2007 on the Netlog Internet platform . In 2007 Index Ventures and Atomico Ventures invested five million euros in Netlog. The Company Netlog NV , which was largely financed by advertising, had its headquarters in the Belgian Ghent and employed 2008 about 35 employees. In January 2011 Netlog merged into the Belgian stock corporation Massive Media NV , which was also founded in 2000 by Lorenz Bogaert and Toon Coppens.

privacy

Netlog was criticized for the fact that there were hardly any opportunities for members to protect their privacy and that the so-called Friendfinder function automatically sent out invitations repeatedly and collected extensive data.

In June 2009, the Belgian copyright management company SABAM brought an action for an injunction against Netlog and requested, among other things, that Netlog be relieved of any inadmissible provision of musical or audiovisual works from SABAM's repertoire under threat of a fine of 1000 euros per day of default. Netlog countered this by stating that the issuance of this injunction order would impose on it a general monitoring obligation for all customers in general and preventively and the establishment of a filter system. In response to a request for a preliminary ruling on this question, the ECJ ruled in February 2012 that the operator of a social network on the Internet cannot be forced to set up a general filter system covering all users of this network in order to prevent the inadmissible use of musical and audiovisual works.

2012 data leak

In July 2018, Netlog sent an email informing users registered before December 2012 about a security vulnerability in their user database.
