Novell NetWare

NetWare is a proprietary operating system from Novell for providing file systems , printers and directory services in a computer network .

It differs from other microcomputer operating systems in that it is not intended to be a personal computer operating system . Even it can only be managed over the network. Appropriate clients are installed on the other computers in the network to manage and use NetWare .

In the early / mid-1980s, NetWare was, alongside Unix, one of the few ways to network x86 -based PCs, exchange files via central directories and share printers.

At that time it already offered a powerful rights management system , which was expanded from NetWare 4.0 with the NDS (NetWare Directory Services, later renamed Novell Directory Services) to a highly scalable distributed directory service. Novell later decoupled the NDS from NetWare and since then has also been selling it as an eDirectory for various platforms.

At the beginning, NetWare relied on its own IPX / SPX as the network protocol , which is easier to configure and much more powerful than TCP / IP in terms of data throughput in local networks . However, as the importance of TCP / IP grew with the Internet, NetWare Version 3 and later supported IP routing. With NetWare versions 3.x and 4.x it was not yet possible to access the file and print services of NetWare via TCP / IP; this was only possible from version 4.11. With NetWare 5, TCP / IP eventually became the standard protocol for NetWare. General support for NetWare by Novell ended in March 2010.

NetWare client

The so-called NetWare Core Protocol (NCP) is used for communication between servers and clients . To access a server using this protocol, the PC needs a NetWare client. With the spread of Windows as a PC system, the SMB protocol (Server Message Block) or its successor CIFS (Common Internet File System) has gained in importance. It is included by default in all Windows operating systems for access to Windows servers.

According to customers, the NetWare client for DOS is still easy to use today. With the aid of the memory management techniques commonly used for DOS, the client can largely be relocated to the high memory area ( HMA ) and thus occupies only minimal space in the limited conventional memory .

NetWare supports from version 3.11 in a bundle with the gateway product the protocols Network File System (NFS) and Apple Filing Protocol (AFP), at the latest from NetWare 5.1 in the enhancement pack also CIFS for communication with Windows computers, Unix derivatives or (older) Macintosh computers. This usually means that a NetWare client is no longer required.

Novell Open Enterprise Server (OES) uses either a NetWare 6.5 from Support Pack 3 or a SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 from Support Pack 3 as the operating system. Novell Open Enterprise Server 2 (OES2) uses either a NetWare 6.5 from Support Pack 5 or a SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 from Support Pack 1 as the operating system. The customers were offered a migration route for their required services. Many of the previous services run faster on the Linux basis.

Newer services and products from Novell such as iFolder , Mono (now being developed by Xamarin) are developed on Linux, carried over to Windows and Mac OS X, but not to NetWare.

NetWare has steadily lost its market leadership in PC-based networks, which existed in the 1980s and 1990s, since the 1990s.
