The Network Particle World ( NTW for short , sometimes incorrectly Network Particle Physics) is a project of the TU Dresden , which aims to inform young people and students about current research in particle physics and to offer them contact with scientists. It is headed by Michael Kobel and is under the patronage of the German Physical Society . Since 2017, funding by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research has been running under the name of cutting-edge research, knowledge transfer and recruiting from a single source .

history

The project was launched by Michael Kobel in 2010 to create a "national [s] network of research institutes, schools and learning locations, scientists, pupils, teachers and students". First of all, particle physics masterclasses were offered, which were based on the International Masterclasses of the International Particle Physics Outreach Group (IPPOG). A total of 27 research institutes from Germany as well as the large experiments at the Large Hadron Collider ( ATLAS , CMS , ALICE and LHCb ) participate in this network. It was awarded the following prizes:

activities

The Particle World Network program is structured in stages in order to both interest as many young people as possible in particle physics and to enable top-level funding. Masterclasses are held nationwide , in which around 5000 students take part every year. On these project days, the young people learn more about the theoretical and experimental principles of research. Originally, the masterclasses only dealt with the big experiments at CERN . In the meantime, however, there are other offers, including experiments in astroparticle physics such as the Pierre Auger Observatory or the lifetime measurement of cosmic muons . The special feature of these events is that the students can evaluate processed, original data from the respective experiments. This is followed by an exchange with groups of students from all over the world and researchers at CERN in international masterclasses .

To deepen their knowledge, the young people can organize their own master classes at their schools, give lectures on particle physics themselves or do project work. This is also the qualification to take part in a multi-day excursion to CERN. There you can view experiments and hear lectures from scientists. After their first visit, interested schoolchildren can return to CERN for project weeks and work with scientists on their own experiments.

The student alumni can take part in intermediary workshops and supervise master classes themselves. At an annual alumni meeting, one or more alumni coordinators are elected to take on nationwide communication. With the fellowship program, which has existed since 2016, successful participants should be given more support in their studies and introduced to work in the research groups. In addition, the NTW offers handouts and teaching material on particle physics, organizes teacher training, supervises research projects for young people and supports other associations such as the young DPG in their work. Further experiments are available at locations such as DESY Zeuthen. The TEILCHENWELTEN newsletter regularly reports on the activities of the NTW . In order to enable location-independent familiarization with scientific experiments, laypeople have been able to evaluate measurement data from experiments on the Polarstern and Neumayer Station III at Cosmic @ Web since 2015 .
