The New Mosque ( Arabic المسجد الجديد al-Masjid al-Jadid , Algerian-Arabic Djama'a El Djedid or Jamaa al-Jdid , Turkish Yeni Cami ) is an Ottoman mosque in Algiers , the capital of Algeria .

It was built in 1660 and, unlike the majority of the Malikites in North Africa, followed the Hanefite school of law. During the French colonial rule in Algeria, the mosque was also called Mosquée de la Pêcherie due to its proximity to the coast , which means the Mosque of the Fisherman's Wharf in English and, back-translated into German, means “Mosque of the Fisheries”.

The New Mosque has the floor plan of a three-aisled basilica and is built of stone, marble, brick and plaster. It combines Byzantine with (especially with regard to the minaret ) Moorish- Maghreb architectural elements. The central dome of the building reaches a height of 24 meters and rests on a drum , which in turn is built on four columns and four pendants. These four corners are in turn enclosed by four octagonal domes. Of the areas between the square rooms, barrel vaults cover three of the four sides, while the fourth area ( facing the qibla wall) is covered by a fourth vault, which has three hollows and is flanked on both sides by two aisles. There is an inscription above the mihrab .
