The New Palatinate is the seat of the government and parliament of the canton of St. Gallen . The building in the Baroque style was built from 1767 to 1769 as the residence of the abbot of the prince abbey of St. Gallen . As part of the monastery district , the Palatinate was added to the UNESCO list of world cultural heritage in 1983.

Under the building there is an entrance to the historical court cellar and the Palatinate cellar , which was designed in a modern way in 1998/1999 by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava .

The prince's throne room is now the canton's council room. It was furnished in the style of historicism in 1881. The portal of the government building today shows the bundle of lictors as the coat of arms of the canton and the number "MDCCCIII" (1803).

The futuristically furnished Pfalzkeller is accessed through a corridor to the lower floor, the metal slats of which can be folded up to the floor.
