The New Fountain in the Bleichenviertel of Mainz is a late baroque building . It was built in the period from 1724 to 1726 by Johannes Weydt (court craftsman and city architect under Elector Lothar Franz von Schönborn ). The most striking feature of the fountain is the approximately 12 meter high obelisk in the center, which is covered with bas-reliefs on various topics. At its base there are a total of four sculptures , each depicting two river gods and two lions. The oval basin and the obelisk are made of red sandstone .

The river gods ( Rhine and Main ) were created by Franz Matthias Hiernle in 1726 , but they were exchanged for copies in 1877; the originals have since been exhibited in the Landesmuseum Mainz . By Joseph Scholl coming sphinx-like lion Savonnières (limestone) , which from 1828 formerly existing nymphs replaced.

The last renovation work on the well was completed in autumn 2002.

The fountain is located on the Neubrunnenplatz, named after him, on the Große Bleiche .
