New Csardas for "Die Fledermaus"

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The New Csardas for “Die Fledermaus” is a composition by Johann Strauss Sohn (without opus number). It was performed for the first time on May 2, 1901 in Berlin.

Remarks

For January 6, 1897, the Vienna Court Opera put the operetta Die Fledermaus on its program. The role of Rosalinde was to be played by the mezzo-soprano Marie Renard . But she felt overwhelmed by the song Klänge der Heimat (No. 10 of the score, also known as Csárdás ). For this reason, Johann Strauss wrote a new version of the number towards the end of 1896. However, the singer did not sing this version during the performance. Instead, she sang the Eva waltz from the unsuccessful Strauss opera Ritter Pásmán . The newly written Csardas initially disappeared in the archive. A shortened, pure orchestral version of the work was incorporated into the ballet Cinderella either by Johann Strauss or by Josef Bayer . This version can be heard on the CD recording mentioned below. The world premiere took place together with the ballet in Berlin.

The playing time on the CD listed under individual records is 3 minutes and 39 seconds. This time can vary somewhat depending on the conductor's musical conception.
