Marie Therese Renard , actually Marie Pölzl , (born January 8, 1864 in Graz , Austrian Empire , † October 19, 1939 in Graz, German Empire ) was an Austrian opera singer of the vocal ranges ( alto / mezzo-soprano ).

Life

Marie Renard initially trained with singing master Anton Prelinger and the actress Louise Weinlich-Tipka . She made her debut at the Graz City Theater in 1882 with the role of Azucena in Trovatore . There she saw director Eduard Kreibig and hired her for the German Theater in Prague in 1883 . On July 20 of the same year she was there in the role of Nancy. Her negotiations for a longer engagement dragged on and only when the impresario Eugenio Merelli also wanted to sign her, Renard was engaged in Prague from 1882 to 1885. In September 1885 she performed a guest performance at the Hoftheater Berlin with sensational success , where she also became a member of the ensemble with effect from January 1, 1886.

From this time on, Renard sang mostly mezzo-soprano. In Berlin she continued to work on her voice, which is why she also took private lessons with de Ruda. At the end of September 1888 she said goodbye to her Berlin audience with the title role in Bizet's Carmen and moved to the court theater in Vienna . There she sang the role of Carmen on October 6th of the same year. Renard achieved her greatest successes with her interpretation of Massenet's Manon (first on November 18, 1890) and with Charlotte ( Werther , for the first time in the world premiere on February 16, 1892).

At the request of the imperial court, Renard was appointed imperial chamber singer with effect from May 12, 1896 . On January 29, 1900, she gave an official farewell performance at the Court Opera Theater. On May 18, 1901, she married Count Rudolf Kinsky (1856–1921) in Budapest , who had divorced because of her.

Quote

The music critic Eduard Hanslick wrote on the occasion of the performance of The Little Bell of the Hermit in the New Free Press :

“The soul of the performance was Renard, who had only been a member of the opera theater for a few weeks and was already an avowed darling of the audience. They recognized with quick instinct that there was something still rare in the charming young woman from Styria: a pronounced individuality and a real original talent! "
