The new water tower is a landmark of Dessau . The water tower is 63.50 m high and its water tank has a capacity of over 1000 m³. The new water tower is no longer used for the water supply .

prehistory

As early as 1615 there was a water supply for the city of Dessau in parts of lead and wooden pipes, but most Dessau residents had to use the public fountains on streets and squares or they had their own fountain. It was only after 1870 that the city was supplied with an extensive water supply network . In 1875 the foundation stone for the first Dessau water tower (capacity 600 m³) was laid in Heidestrasse (corner of Bauhofstrasse), but the water of the tower contained a lot of iron . Today the State Archive of Saxony-Anhalt , Dessau department, is located in the old water tower .

The new water tower

After new boreholes that were supposed to deliver better water, the Dessau city architect and architect Paul Engel began building a second water tower in 1896, the New Water Tower on Lutherplatz, which was completed in 1897. The tower is 63.50 m high. The water tank of the New Water Tower had a capacity of 1100 m³. The base diameter is 17.00 m inside and 22.00 m outside. This water tower, built in the style of eclecticism , is still a landmark of the city that can be seen from afar. After the reconstruction of the municipal waterworks in 1930, the two water towers in Dessau were no longer needed. In contrast to Primary School III in the immediate vicinity, also called "Luther School" by the Dessau people because of its location on Lutherplatz, the water tower was largely spared from the Allied air raids on March 7, 1945. Already exposed to decay and threatened with demolition during the GDR era, the New Water Tower survived thanks to a lack of financial means. There were projects for the renovation and expansion of the tower, which also failed because of the lack of money.

In February 1995, the new water tower was a single monument in the monument list included Dessau town. In 1996 the water tower was sold to a private investor. He planned the renovation of the tower and the installation of catering facilities and offices. After the expansion of the water tank, however, the construction work ended and the tower fell into disrepair.

In order to protect the water tower from further deterioration, to restore the exterior as true to the original as possible and to preserve it in the long term through cost-covering use, the “Association for the Promotion and Preservation of the New Water Tower” was founded on October 26, 2006. V. “Since the association is dependent on donations and subsidies and these only flow slowly, the renovation can only take place in small steps. In March 2009, the renovation of the tower roof could finally begin. The most necessary work was completed in good time for winter and the tower was thus sustainably protected from further deterioration. In 2012/2013 the lantern and 2 of the 4 oriel towers could then be renovated with donations and subsidies.
