The New Town Hall

The New Town Hall in Prague (Czech Nová radnice ) is located on the east side of Mariánské náměstí in the center of the Old Town in the Prague 1 district . The building opposite the Klementinum has been the seat of the Prague City Council and the Lord Mayor since 1945 .

architecture

The building was erected between 1908 and 1911 based on a design by Art Nouveau architect Osvald Polívka . The plans were changed several times during construction. The building is adorned with statues and sculptures by Stanislav Sucharda , Josef Mařatka and Ladislav Šaloun . On the northern corner is the figure of a knight, on the southern corner the statue of Rabbi Löw , the legendary creator of the golem . In 1998 a memorial plaque for Milada Horáková by Jaroslava Lukešová was placed on the town hall .

It was to serve as a tax office with 250 office rooms and was modernly equipped for its time, for example with a paternoster elevator that is still preserved today . The core of the building is a large hall on the first floor, which today serves as a meeting room for the city council. After the neo-Gothic wing of the Old Town Hall burned down in 1945, the entire city administration moved to the new official building. Since then the old town hall has only been used for representational purposes.
