The New Castle in Freyenstein is a castle in the Freyenstein district of Wittstock / Dosse in the Ostprignitz-Ruppin district in Brandenburg .

history

The New Castle was built west of the Old Castle partly over the city wall. It is a three-story, originally probably plastered building made of irregular mixed masonry. At its core, it consists of a permanent house , which was probably built for Dietrich von Rohr . A profound renovation took place after dendrochronological dating (d) in the years 1564/65 with new vaults in the basement and ground floor and the second floor. Further alterations and changes were made for the von Winterfeld family in 1617/20 (d), in the second half of the 17th century and in the 19th century. The castle was restored in 1975/76 and after 1990.

After various uses as a school and commercial enterprise, the castle was used by the library and an alternative book market until 2011. After extensive restoration, the palace library resumed its work on the 2nd floor of the historic building. The Archaeological Park office and visitor information are located on the ground floor .

architecture

Two asymmetrical, formerly three tower-like porches and the gate tower of the Wittstocker Tor are attached to the block-like main building on the city side. The other fronts are smooth; the windows were changed to a rectangular shape in the 18th century, traces of arched windows can be seen in many places. The east gable is structured by wide vertical templates.

Inside the castle was changed several times, including around 1800. In the stair tower there is a wooden spiral staircase from 1616 (d). On the ground floor there are two smaller halls with finely stuccoed arched flat tubs (probably from the end of the 17th century) as well as the large, restored courtyard room with a ridge vault and geometric stucco decoration at the beginning of the vault. On the upper floors, the historical sequence of rooms with a heavy beamed ceiling with a nave decoration has been partially restored.
