history

The New Year reception dates back to 1926. Carl Wilhelm Petersen established the tradition. This has its origin in audiences that have been held in Hamburg at the beginning of the year since the 18th century . Dignitaries and diplomats residing in the city took part. In the 19th century, the reception was held in the mayor's private house. In 1901 Gerhard Hachmann changed the place; he chose the town hall.
