history

In the early 1950s, the city council of Lauchhammer decided to build a housing estate in the Mitte district for the employees of the Lauchhammer coking plant. Construction of the Neustadt I residential complex began in 1952, one year before the city of Lauchhammer was granted city rights. The design for the residential area comes from the Halle architect Max Heide , the first construction phase was carried out by VEB Union Neugersdorf. In 1953 the first 700 apartments in the settlement were completed. In parallel to the residential area, infrastructure facilities such as kindergartens, a school and a polyclinic were also built. This led to a rapid increase in the resident population.

The buildings are predominantly three-storey structures that were built in massive brick construction and later plastered. The buildings are covered with pitched roofs . After the reunification in the GDR and the closure of the Klettwitz-Nord open-cast lignite mine in 1992, many residents left the settlement, which is why Neustadt I had to struggle with a high number of vacancies. In September 2001, a total of 56% of the 1,498 apartments in Neustadt I were vacant, in some cases even entire apartment blocks. By December 31, 2015, 422 apartments had been demolished, reducing the vacancy rate to 36%.

From 2017, the renovation of the partly very dilapidated apartment blocks was started with subsidies . The houses are managed by the Lauchhammer housing association “Am Lauch” eG.
