The New Dorp Lighthouse is a decommissioned lighthouse in New Dorp , Staten Island , New York City . The funds for the construction of the lighthouse were approved by the United States Congress on August 31, 1852. The structure was completed in 1856. The system served as a marker for the entrance to the Swash Channel, a waterway in Lower New York Bay . It was planned by Richard Carlow, who built the Chapel Hill Light and the Point Comfort Range Lights in New Jersey around the same time. Ships sailing the Swash Channel had to head for the beacon in New Dorp until the Chapel Hill Light came into view, which marked the course of the fairway from the West Bank.

Originally the lighthouse had a second order Fresnel lens with a steady red light that was 192  feet (around 58 m) above sea level. In 1891 the light sign was changed to a steady white light. In 1907 the light source was switched from oil to an electric light source, which increased the luminosity. In 1939 a six-stage Fresnel lens was installed.

The New Dorp Lighthouse was decommissioned and barricaded in 1964. For the next ten years the property and the building were neglected and vandalized; In 1974 it was auctioned for US $ 32,000  to a private individual from Staten Island who extensively renovated it and converted it into an apartment.

New Dorp Light was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. As early as 1967 the structure, which cannot be visited by the public, was designated as a New York City Landmark .
