The new Kitakyūshū Airport ( Japanese 新 北九州 空港 , Shin-Kitakyūshū Kūkō ) was built on an artificial island east of the city of Kitakyūshū in Fukuoka Prefecture and replaced the old, much smaller airport on March 16, 2006. Larger aircraft can now operate from the new airport, and the airport is open 24 hours a day. The previous airport of Kitakyushu has since been closed. The new Kitakyushu Airport is classified as a 2nd class airport under Japanese law .
Airlines and Destinations
The largest airline in the area is StarFlyer , which was only founded in 2002 . An Airbus A320-200 of the airline based in Kitakyūshū was the first airliner to land on the runway on February 8, 2006, and scheduled operations to Tokyo Haneda began three months later .
Reason for construction
The old airport in Kitakyūshū had an unfavorable location, as it was close to residential areas and in a valley and did not allow continuous operation (only from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.). In addition, because of its small runway of 1,600 meters, it only offered small aircraft a landing opportunity. The lack of space made expansion impossible. Because of these restrictions, calls for a new airport elsewhere arose as early as the late 1970s. In the absence of space in the country for a new airport, it was finally decided to build it east of the city on the sea on an artificial island. Construction of the artificial island began in 1994 - the third airport project of its kind in Japan after Kansai Airport and Chūbu Airport.
statistics
Up to August 2, 2006 more than 1 million passengers were counted, on January 5, 2007 the 2 million mark was exceeded.
