The brownish Puffball ( Lycoperdon umbrinum ) is a mushroom from the family of mushroom relatives (Agaricaceae).
features
The fruiting body is pear-shaped to almost spherical. The color is initially pale gray-brown, later medium to dark brown. It becomes two to four centimeters high. It is studded with many soft spines that easily peel off. The spines are less than a millimeter long and do not form a network pattern after falling off. The smell and taste are spicy and mushroom-like. The spore powder is olive brown. The spores are round, dotted to fine-black and have a diameter of 3.5 to 5.5 micrometers.
Occurrence
The species is native to Central Europe. It occurs particularly in coniferous forests under spruce trees , especially in the mountains. It grows on both acidic and chalky subsoil.
Food value
The mushroom is edible when it is young.
