New London School

The New London School was a school in New London , Rusk County , Texas . It was built in 1932.

The school was heated with natural gas . A gas explosion on March 18, 1937 killed 295 people. The school was rebuilt on the site. It is now called West Rusk High School after it was merged with Gaston ISD .

The state of Texas legally mandated the addition of methanethiol to natural gas as a warning against gas spread. The practice has been adopted worldwide.
