The Franziskaner is a former Franciscan monastery in the old town of Schwäbisch Gmünd , which is used today as a Catholic community and administrative center.

history

Monastery time

In the 15th century the foundation of the Gmünder Franciscan monastery is dated to 1208. However, this year lacks any written evidence. The Franciscan order was only founded in Italy in 1210, the first brothers came to Germany temporarily in 1217 and permanently from 1221.

Research on the structure of the monastery church shows that the monastery was probably founded before 1250, even if the earliest documented evidence of the monastery dates from 1281. It belonged to the Upper German (Strasbourg) order province . It is assumed that Walther von Rinderbach , Burkhard Wolf and Peter Wolf, who died between 1270 and 1274 and were buried in the monastery, are among the founders in the role of benefactors . Although the Gothic monastery buildings became increasingly dilapidated in the middle of the 16th century, only repairs and partial renovations were carried out in the 16th and 17th centuries . A new building was only considered after the fire of 1689. The plans met with resistance in the vicinity of the monastery due to the height of the new building, which is why the monastery waived a floor in the further plans. The laying of the foundation stone for the new building was on April 19, 1718. After the completion of the building, the city council ruled that it “had a small political residence as a modern religious building.” In 1736 the monastery founded a school , which later became a grammar school in the Lard pit . In 1803 there was also secularization in Schwäbisch Gmünd , when all monasteries were abolished. The Franciscan monastery with its Latin school , like the Capuchin monastery , was allowed to continue to exist temporarily, but had to accept the Dominicans from the preacher monastery in Gmünd .

After secularization

Even if the monastery was initially allowed to continue to exist after 1803, there were also restrictions in the Franciscan monastery in the following period. In 1805 the Oberamt assesses whether it is suitable for a breeding and workhouse , which, however, was probably negative. In 1813 the 20 shoe high monastery wall was removed. The last religious remained in the Franciscan monastery and at the school until 1822.

In 1825 it was decided to convert it into a Catholic school teacher seminar, which was carried out until 1827. From 1872 to 1874 the seminar was enlarged by adding heights to the convent building and building a music hall in the east wing. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, the extended seminar became too small again and a new building was built, today's Alte PH . The Catholic school teacher seminar is one of the predecessor institutes of today's University of Education in Schwäbisch Gmünd . After he moved out, the Gmünder Aufbaugymnasium was housed in the Franziskaner.

After the advanced high school moved into a new building, in 1971 an ideas competition was held on how the Franciscan can be converted into a Catholic community center. This then happened gradually from 1974 to 1985.

Monastery church

The Gothic , Baroque-style monastery church with Romanesque components was consecrated to Saint Louis of Toulouse . In 1908, Bishop Paul Wilhelm von Keppler established a second Catholic inner-city congregation and raised the former St. Ludwig monastery church to the second parish church of St. Franziskus with the patron saint St. Ludwig.
