The old PH in Schwäbisch Gmünd is a representative building of the neo-renaissance with style elements of the Art Nouveau and the Baroque , which was built between 1902 and 1905. The building with today's address at Lessingstrasse 7 is considered the most important and now the only remaining representative of the school seminar building in Württemberg .

history

After the Gmünder teachers' seminar at its location in the Franziskaner became too small around the turn of the 19th to the 20th century, plans to move and build new buildings came up. From 1902 to 1905 the castle-like building was erected west of the old town. On October 5, 1905, it was handed over to its destination.

In 1934, the National Socialists moved the seminar to Rottweil and the building was converted into a state orphanage. The orphanages from Ellwangen and Ochsenhausen , among others , were combined in Schwäbisch Gmünd.

After the Second World War, the teachers' college was re-established as the Schwäbisch Gmünd Pedagogical Institute and, from 1962, as the Schwäbisch Gmünd University of Education . The growing university moved to its new campus in 1972, with only a few areas remaining at the original location.

Today the Alte PH houses the music department of the university, the state seminars for didactics and teacher training for the secondary schools as well as for the elementary and secondary schools as well as a police station in the east wing as well as a criminal field office , which in 2014 will be a permanent criminal service for the districts of Schwäbisch Hall , Rems -Murr-Kreis and the Ostalbkreis was converted.

layout

The three-storey building has the shape of an E, with the middle beam as a chapel building . The central risalit was crowned by a ridge turret with bells. This has now been canceled. On the second floor of the central projectile there is an auditorium decorated with stucco , which has an organ .
