New York City Police Commissioner
The New York City Police Commissioner is the head of the New York City Police Department . The commissioner is appointed by the mayor and is responsible for the day-to-day running of the department and the appointment of its deputies and subordinate police officers. The commissioner is a civilian administrator and he and his subordinate deputies are sworn civilians and uniformed members of the guard. There is also the separate position of the Chief of Department , who is the highest-ranking member of the guard. The commissioner corresponds to the chief of police in many European countries.
Keechant Sewell , selected by the new mayor Eric Adams , has held the post since the beginning of 2022 . She succeeds Dermot Shea , who was appointed by Mayor Bill de Blasio .

With over 13 years of service in two non-consecutive terms (1992–1994, 2002–2013), Raymond Kelly is the longest-serving Police Commissioner to date.
