Eric Adams (politician)
Eric Leroy Adams (born September 1, 1960 ) is a retired American police officer, Democratic Party politician, and author. He has been the 110th Mayor of New York City since January 1, 2022 . He was previously the 18th borough president of the borough of Brooklyn . As a Democratic candidate , he won the New York City mayoral election on November 2, 2021.
Life
Adams is the son of a butcher and a cleaning lady. Both parents had moved to New York from Alabama in the 1950s and had little formal education. Adams was one of six children and grew up in a very poor neighborhood in Brooklyn and Queens .
In 1984 he graduated from the Police Academy as one of the best in his class and worked as a New York City Transit Police officer for the New York City Police Department . From 1993 he had the rank of sergeant. He retired in 2006 with the rank of captain. In the era of Rudy Giuliani he was a Republican , in 2006 he moved to the Democrats. From 2006 to 2013 he was a member of the New York Senate . In November 2013, Adams was elected Brooklyn Borough President, the first African American in the position, and was re-elected in November 2017.
On November 17, 2020, Adams announced his candidacy for Mayor of New York City . After winning the Democratic primary on June 22, 2021 , he won the October general election against Republican Curtis Sliwa . The Democratic incumbent Bill de Blasio , whose second term expired at the end of 2021, was no longer allowed to run.
Adams feeds due to type 2 diabetes disease infection vegan . He is committed to healthier eating in schools and hospitals.
