Keechant Sewell

Keechant L. Sewell (born April 2, 1972 ) is an American police officer in a prominent executive position. Since the beginning of 2022 she leads in New York City as Police Commissioner , the New York City Police Department , the police department of the city and largest police unit of the United States .

Life

Sewell is from Queens , one of the five boroughs of New York City . She spent her early childhood in the social housing of Queensbridge Houses , later she lived in the districts of Corona and Jamaica . As of December 2021, Sewell is at home in Valley Stream on Long Island , is unmarried and has no children.

Career

Sewell has been in the police force since 1997. Sewell received specialist training in counter-terrorism and negotiating with hostage-takers at the FBI . Before moving to the top of the NYPD, she worked for the police in neighboring Nassau County for 23 years , most recently in an executive position as Chief of Detectives . Sewell is only the third person of African American descent and a woman in this position for the first time. She took over the office at the suggestion of New York City Mayor Eric Adams . The predecessor in office was Dermot Shea . Although it had been expected that the position would be taken by a woman, Sewell's appointment came as a surprise.
