The NY 137 begins on the border between the states of New York and Connecticut, in the area of the Town of Pound Ridge as a continuation of the CT 137. Not far from the state line, NY 137 runs east past the Pound Ridge Golf Club, which extends along the state line . NY 137 continues north and is called High Ridge Road there , crosses Old Snake Hill Road twice and, after descending from Snake Hill, NY 137 reaches the hamlet of Sarles Corners, where the road crosses Upper Shad Road . NY 137 then runs through a residential area on the flank of Horseshoe Hill until the route crosses Westchester Avenue . At this intersection, NY 137 changes its name and continues as Westchester Avenue .

After this intersection, NY 137 continues north through the city and finally reaches the hamlet of the same name, which consists of several residential buildings and commercial operations that are concentrated around the intersection with the eastern endpoint of NY 172 (Pound Ridge Road). In a northeast direction, NY 137 leaves the village and leads past the Hiram Halle Memorial Library to the junction of NY 124 ( Salem Road ). In this section, NY 137 is flanked by trees and leads past a pond. Shortly afterwards there are a few houses on the road, while it climbs westwards up the mountain.

On the other side of the mountain the road descends again and leads in a southwest direction past several small lakes and the Stone Hill River . The course of the street now follows a westerly direction again and winding the NY 137 leads past some residential buildings into the area of the Town of Bedford . Within Bedford street retains its name when, crosses the Stonehill River and descend to the hamlet of Bedford , where NY 137 at the intersection with the here Old Post Road called NY 121 reaches its northern end.

history

NY 137 was first identified as the continuation of the northbound road from Stamford, Connecticut when the State Routes were renumbered in New York in 1930 . The original route began north of the hamlet of Bedford and leads from NY 22 over Girdle Ridge Road and Pea Pond Road and a short distance overlapping with NY 121 to the state border in Connecticut. On September 1, 1980, ownership and maintenance of Girdle Ridge Road and Pea Pond Road were transferred from the state to Westchester County. NY 137 was therefore cut at the southern end of the overlap with NY 121. The former route of NY 137 along Girdle Ridge Road and Pea Pond Road has been re-designated as County Route 309.

An expressway planned in the 1950s along Route 137 in the two states was not realized.

NY 137A

NY 137A was a branch line that connected NY 137 on Westchester Avenue with State Highway 184 (later Route 124 ) in Connecticut. This route, which was also established in 1930, was renumbered as NY 104 in 1932, before being given a new number as NY 394 in 1936 in order to eliminate the duplication with US Highway 104 in upstate New York . In 1967 NY 394 became an extension of NY 124. However, this measure was short-lived; From 1970 on, the NY 124 ended in the hamlet of Pound Ridge. The Westchester Avenue is in this area now maintained by the Town of Pound Ridge.
