history
The area was first settled in 1744, near what is now the center of the town. The population grew steadily, so that on March 7, 1788 the town was founded. The name is derived from an Indian deer trap (English: pound ) that stood there at the foot of a slope. Until the middle of the 19th century, baskets were woven at home in Pound Ridge and sold to mussel fishermen on the nearby Atlantic coast. The decline of the industry was caused both by cheaper imported goods and industrially woven baskets, and by the extinction of mussel beds due to increasing water pollution on the coast. Pound Ridge was also a center of the pre-industrial shoe industry.
Today, Pound Ridge is primarily used as a home for wealthy citizens.
