New York State Route 376 is a 14 miles long highway that lies entirely in Dutchess County in the Hudson River Valley of New York State . The route runs north from its southern terminus on NY-52 at East Fishkill through Hopewell Junction and Red Oaks Mill to Arlington at the junction with US Route 44 and 55 . Route 376 was part of New York State Route 39 in the 1920s , when the East Fishkill-Poughkeepsie section was renumbered in 1930 as Route 202. It was later named NY-376 to avoid confusion with US Highway 202 .

Route description

From its starting point on NY 52 in East Fishkill, the road heads north about 2,400 m, crosses Fishkill Creek and reaches the hamlet of Hopewell Junction . From the junction with New York State Route 82 , it coincides with it for about 150 m before turning northwest, crossing the railroad, and making a sharp 90 degree turn. At this point, it is recommended that you maintain a maximum speed of 5  mph (8 km / h). After another winding section with a speed limit of 20 mph (32 km / h), the maximum speed is limited to 45 mph (72 km / h) in the further course. NY 376 passes the Dogwood Knolls Country Club before hitting Dutchess County Route 29 in the hamlet of Fishkill Plains. From there, NY 376 continues west.

After the road entered the Town of Wappinger from the Town of East Fishkill area , NY 376 swings north at the intersection with Dutchess County Route 93. She continues in this direction for about two kilometers and crosses the hamlet of Diddell before she follows a westerly direction again. It goes through Hamlet New Hackensack , where it crosses County Routes 94 and then 104. At this intersection, NY 376 turns north and runs along the eastern edge of Dutchess County Airport , whose passenger terminal is served from the road. North of the airport, NY 376 follows Wappinger Creek after it reaches the LaGrange city limits . A little later, NY 376 crosses Wappinger Creek into the Town of Poughkeepsie .

Roundabout at Vassar College

In the hamlet of Red Oaks Mill belonging to Poughkeepsie , NY 376 meets the east end of New York State Route 113 ( Spackenkill Road ) and the north end of Dutchess County Route 77 ( Vassar Road ). Route 376 approaches this intersection at an angle of 45 °, so that depending on the direction of travel, difficult maneuvers may occur here. After the intersection, NY 376 continues on New Hackensack Road , the northward extension of Vassar Road . After approximately 2.3 miles north and northwest, NY 376 turns right at Vassar College on Raymond Avenue . This stretch of road is called Hooker Avenue and is designated New York State Route 983T , an unmarked connection to the border between the Town of Poughkeepsie and the City of Poughkeepsie . Route 376 then follows Raymond Avenue for about 1,600 m before crossing the eastbound carriageway of US 44 / NY 55 and Main Street (County Road 114) and finally in the hamlet of Arlington on the westbound carriageway of US 44 / NY 55 ends.

history

Route 376 was part of the then New York State Route 39 , which ran from Patterson via West Patterson and East Fishkill to Poughkeepsie (City) during the 1920s . When renumbered in 1930, the section of Route 39 between Poughkeepsie and East Fishkill was repurposed as New York State Route 202 , between East Fishkill and the western edge of Patterson the route became New York State Route 52 and the rest of the route became New York State Route 311 signposted. In 1934, US Highway 202 was designated by the AASHO . To resolve a numbering conflict, Route 202 became Route 376 the following year.

Roundabouts

Roundabouts at Vassar College

Roundabouts along Raymond Avenue have led to criticism from local residents because one lane of travel has been dropped, so that the previously four-lane road has been turned into a two-lane route with a separate lane, thus changing the previously existing traffic habits. Some of the traffic has shifted to other local roads.

There are currently two such roundabouts, one at the main entrance to Vassar College and one on College Avenue, both of which have replaced a traffic light controlled intersection. In addition, an earlier pedestrian traffic light has been removed. Another roundabout should be built in the summer of 2008 at the intersection with Fulton Avenue. This conversion includes measures to calm traffic in some side streets that have shown increased use since the roundabouts were set up. The New York State Department of Transportation calls the project a success because traffic has been calmed, congestion has decreased and traffic flow has improved.
