The institute's headquarters are in Rotorua . There are three other offices entrusted with specific tasks in Auckland , Wellington and Christchurch , with the Christchurch office with 25 employees being by far the largest branch.

history

In the 1980s, the New Zealand government began to restructure research and science . 1989 was for the Ministry of Research, Science and Technology (Ministry of Research, Science and Technology created) with the aim of advising the government to prepare decision-making processes to prioritize resources awards and introduce the performance review. But that's not all. The aim was to create individual institutes for different areas of responsibility that would operate independently and responsibly under government supervision, work with their own guidelines and rules , and carry out public and private-sector contracts based on success.

With the Crown Research Institutes Act 1992 , ten Crown Research Institutes were founded for this purpose , eight of which still exist today. The New Zealand Forest Research Institute is one of them.

With the Companies Act 1993 , all institutions were converted into limited companies. The New Zealand Forest Research Institute is today, like all other Crown Research Institute and the Crown Company Unit (controlling and advisory department) Ministry of Finance and the minister responsible for Research, Science and Technology assumed. Both ministers responsible are always registered as shareholders of the eight Crown Research Institutes .

Scion

Since 2005 attempts have been made to give the institute a new image with a new name . Whether Scion , in German : offshoot, offspring, scion, sapling or cutting, the right handle for the name of the institute remains to be seen. After all, Toyota has registered the name Scion under trademark law , albeit only in the USA so far . The name Scion is not yet registered as a company name in New Zealand, but the name Scion Australasia Limited is . The company is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the New Zealand Forest Research Institute Limited and was founded for the purpose of the Ensis (50/50) joint venture with the Australian Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO). Scion Australasia Limited was formed through 3 company changes on June 14, 2004 as Forest Research Limited . The confusion of names can be explained a little about the reorientation from 2005 to biotechnology.

The New Zealand Forest Research Institute contributed 1/3 of its activities to the joint venture company when it was founded and transferred another third to the start of operations.
