Newton Henry Mason

Newton Henry Mason (born December 24, 1918 in New York City , † May 8 or 9, 1942) was an American Marine in World War II .

Mason enlisted as a seaman in the United States Naval Reserve on November 7, 1940, and was promoted to ensign on February 10, 1941 . Between May 8 and May 9, 1942, he died after an air raid by Japanese troops in the Battle of the Coral Sea . Newton Henry Mason was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his skill and courage in battle.

The destroyer escort USS Mason (DE-529) was named after him.
