Newton Silas Bement
Newton Silas Bement (born April 27, 1896 in Webberville , Ingham County , Michigan , † September 17, 1958 in Ann Arbor , Michigan) was an American Romance studies and French didactic .
life and work
Bement studied at Transylvania University in Lexington and at the University of Michigan (graduated in 1917). After military service and studies in France, he was from 1920 in Ann Arbor instructor for French and Spanish. In 1930 he received his doctorate with the thesis French modal syntax in the sixteenth century (Ann Arbor 1934). He became Assistant Professor from 1937, Associate Professor from 1949 and Full Professor of French from 1956.
