The Nez Perce National Forest is a 9,000 square kilometer national forest in the western center of the US state Idaho . The forest is bordered to the east by the state of Montana , to the north by the Clearwater National Forest , to the west by part of the Wallowa – Whitman National Forest and to the south by the Payette National Forest . The closest town is Grangeville .
history
The Nez Perce National Forest and the Clearwater National Forest were administratively merged in 2012 as Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests with the head office in Kamiah . There are local ranger district offices in Elk City , Grangeville, Kooskia and White Bird .
The forest was established on July 1, 1908 by the US Forest Service by merging 7,876.6 square kilometers from the Bitterroot National Forest and the Weiser National Forest . On October 29, 1934, part of the Selway National Forest was incorporated .
habitat
The mountains of the reserve provide habitat for Mackenzie wolf , raccoon , elk , black bear , coyote , puma , Rocky Mountain elk , two species of fox , American pigeon hares , Ponderosa scops , pine marten , white-tailed deer and mule deer , muskrat , North American river otters , Peregrine falcons , mink , marmots , fishing marten and mountain goat .
Wilderness areas
There are four officially designated wilderness areas within the Nez Perce National Forest that are part of the National Wilderness Preservation System . Three of them belong (for the most part) to neighboring National Forests (see below).
- Frank Church – River of No Return Wilderness (only 4.68% belong to the Nez Perce NF; most areas are in the Payette National Forest, Challis NF , Salmon NF , Boise NF or in the Bitterroot NF )
- Gospel Hump Wilderness
- Hells Canyon Wilderness (mainly in the Wallowa National Forest; partly in the Payette National Forest, in the Whitman National Forest, or directly under the Bureau of Land Management )
- Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness (partly in Bitterroot NF, in Clearwater National Forest or in Lolo NF )
