Nezihe Muhiddin (1910s or early 1920s)

Nezihe Muhiddin , also Nezihe Muhittin Tepedelengil, (* 1889 in Istanbul ; † February 10, 1958 there ) was an Ottoman and Turkish women's rights activist, journalist, author and politician. She is considered to be one of the founders of the Turkish women's movement .

Life

Nezihe Muhiddin was born in 1889 as the daughter of a civil servant in the Kandilli district of Istanbul. She attended elementary school there and then received private lessons. After training as a teacher, she worked in this profession for a few years until she became General Secretary of the Ottoman Union for the Protection of Women.

In May / June 1923, Nezihe Muhiddin founded the first Turkish party in the emerging republic, the Kadınlar Halk Fırkası (“Women's People's Party”), which was supposed to stand up for the rights of women. But the party was not admitted because it was considered too radical. Nezihe Muhiddin then founded the Türk Kadınlar Birliği (Turkish Women's Union). The association should continue the work started. In 1927 the Union decided to send a male feminist into the running for the general election. However, this failed after the potential candidate withdrew his approval for the candidacy after meeting Ataturk. The Turkish government had since withdrawn its support from the Union and went on a confrontational course. After Nezihe Muhiddin repeatedly vigorously called for equal rights for women and refused to withdraw their demands, the Union's premises were searched by police and the documents were confiscated.

From 1924 to 1927 Nezihe Muhiddin was editor-in-chief of the weekly feminist magazine Kadın Yolu .

Nezihe Muhiddin died in 1958 in a psychiatric hospital in Istanbul.
